Polyurethane Mining
Polyurethanes are a key material in many mining applications and still have tremendous development potential. Enhanced material properties together with processing techniques that meet the specific needs of the mining industry are making an impact on both design and production. New materials and processing methods are being continually developed by Industrial Urethanes in a 3-way partnership with converters and the industry, to produce high quality, cost-effective solutions to specific problems in the South African mining environment.
Chemical systems supplied for this industry consist either of polyether or polyester systems and can be provided as a two-component or as a three-component system. Applications for these systems are as follows:
- Pipe linings
- Mining screens
- Seals and gaskets
- Ball valves
- Production of castor wheels
- Rotors and stators
- Fittings of different shapes and sizes which are water or solvent resistant
- Lining of metal structures which need to be made abrasion resistant such as cones, cyclones, etc.
Rigid polyurethane systems are also used in this industry for applications such as:
- Hanging-wall consolidation
- Ground consolidation
- Footwall consolidation
- Sealing against water
- Sealing against gas
- Insulation against heat
